Sarah has seen the film at least 10 times.įortunately, her partner Nick Ray is a car guy and is of a practical bent. It wasn’t like she had to have one right away, but it was satisfying to hold that car as the ideal and she could see it in the film, any time she wanted - which she did, quite often. She was familiar with and liked a few American cars and convertibles but when she saw Thelma & Louise, she fell for the ’66 T-Bird hard, and for good. Some people find it hard to settle on one car as their favourite but, for Sarah, it was easy. It was the dream machine for Thelma, Louise - and Sarah Kneebone in Auckland, who owns this particular car. The larger expanse of flat panels connected it more strongly with the ’60s-era styling that both Thelma and Louise adored. It was built on the same basic platform as the third generation but the lines were drawn out and the sculpting more refined, making it look lighter and more elegant, although it was actually considerably heavier. The fourth generation, the Flair Bird, styled by L David Ash and Art Querfeld, was just right. The sleek third-generation Bullet Bird, styled by Bill Boyer, might have been a fit but, like the first generation, the art director probably thought that it was a little too purposeful, especially when compared with the fourth generation. The second-generation Square Bird was a bit too heavy and down in the mouth, even though it won the Motor Trend Car of the Year crown. The first generation, nattily nicknamed the 1955 ‘Early Bird’, also the ‘Baby Bird’, was too much of a sports car for the dreamlike quality needed. It is no accident that the producers of the film Thelma & Louise settled on the ’66 T-Bird as both the symbolic and actual vehicle for the pair’s ultimate romantic escape into (spoiler alert) oblivion. The car that we see here is the fourth generation of the T-Bird that so perfectly crystalises all the elements of the American road trip. They needed a lazy V8, silky suspension, and a decent expanse of metal around the cockpit so that the occupants didn’t feel too insignificant in the vastness of the Midwestern deserts. The long straight highways in both the mind’s eye and reality didn’t need European sports car handling. Looking back, it’s obvious that Ford was right to move away from the original T-Bird concept of an American sports car to add two more seats and luxury touches, like an electric folding hood, electric windows, door locks, seats, mirrors, and multiple ashtrays. That soaring eagle imagery is surely another reason that the Thunderbird resonates so deeply with both American culture and the landscape.ĭespite the legacy of freeway congestion and smog that was dawning in the ’60s, the dream of endless freedom of the highway still burned strong - and Ford created a car that remains today the best way to live that dream - in the expansive comfort of a convertible Thunderbird. While for many people the name will conjure up images of the cars first, they were actually named after an ancient North American mythical creature that created both thunder with a clap of its wings, and indeed, most of the physical world. The name has a music that is just so evocative of all that is good and pure about the golden era of the American automobile. The convertible is a perfect expression of one version of the American dream and, for a lucky few, dreams do come true.īy Ian Parkes, photography by High Art Photography THE AMERICAN DREAM

Perhaps the most unique deck we’ve had in the meta for some time, Jeskai Mutate is a fun mix of control and aggro. Overall, this deck is exceptionally resilient, capable of dealing with almost any type of threat while maintaining control of the board.Ĭheck out a Naya Midrange decklist here. In terms of board protection we are using Selfless Savior and Elite Spellbinder can do some potent enter the battlefield tricks. Blade Historian acts as a terrific finisher since it can give our creatures double strike and Esika’s Chariot can get out of hand if left alone. Jaspera Sentinel, Prosperous Innkeeper, and Lotus Cobra offer us ways to quickly ramp into our threats. Our big drops are Winota, Joiner of Forces and Minsc, Beloved Ranger, while Kenrith, the Returned King offers an uncomfortable amount of versatility. Boasting a comical amount of utility, Naya Midrange is all about dropping creatures, powering them up, and controlling the flow of the board. Plus, we are running two Agadeem’s Awakening, just in case something goes wrong and we need to bring our creatures back.Ĭheck out a Dimir Rogue decklist here. This deck thrives on other midrange or slower decks with expensive spells it can counter or destroy. Boasting quite a bit of removal, we will use cards like Into the Story and Of One Mind to refill our hand. These include Merfolk Windrobber, Soaring Thought-Thief, Thieves’ Guild Enforcer, and Drown in the Loch. While the only D&D cards in this deck are Power Word Kill, the rest consists of the same rogues and tempo spells we’ve seen. My favorite deck in Standard has rocketed back up in popularity, but not because of any new cards. Last updated on September 8, 2021, following card bans. Keep in mind, these decks are pre-Innistrad: The Midnight Hunt and we will update our list in October once the new meta has settled a bit. These are simply what a lot of people are playing and subsequently winning with. Some of the best matches come from wild, unorthodox decks. Remember, just because a deck is labeled as Tier One or Two doesn’t mean that’s all you should play. Looking through statistics on MTGGoldfish for both the Standard format and MTG Arena format, five decks stand above others. With the latest set, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, about to be released and alter the Standard meta it’s time to take one last look at the current best decks before some vanish. Naval Action will eventually grow beyond just being a multiplayer arena, with the addition of a promised Open World mode. Or, at least, the more I understand how I got out-sailed and sunk. I previously had very little interest in the Age of Sail, but Naval Action inspired me to read as much as I could-I’ve been reading the Horatio Hornblower series, the Aubrey/Maturin novels, and Six Frigates, the history of the early US Navy-and it’s gratifying that, the more I know about the era, the better I get at the game. To be honest, I’m still not a very good sailor, but it’s a mark of just how much fun the game is that I can be bad at it but still want to keep playing. Again, luckily, the community is there for you I highly recommend the video series by RamJB as introductions to how to do all those complicated things that steamships don’t have to fret over. Just like a real captain of the era, you have to pay very close attention to the wind direction and understand how to place your ship at the optimal angle, how to tack, and how to manually angle your sails. The depth, which may frustrate a newcomer, is where the real meat of the game can be found. Where things get complicated and deep is when you get into larger, square-rigged ships and need to deal with things like manual sails. And to sail the small starting ships, that’s all you really need to know. Changing ammunition types, controlling your crew, and activating special abilities are done through the number keys. That said, once you know them, the controls are intuitive and easy to remember (w and s increase and decrease sails, a and d operate your rudder), and simple navigation and aiming your guns will come easily to you. One complaint is that there’s no real manual or tutorial-it’s virtually mandatory that you watch YouTube videos or read forums and blogs before getting started-but this is a very early Alpha/Beta product, so I can excuse the lack of documentation. Your ship is alive with sound and motion: crewmen serve the guns, sails billow in the wind, timbers creak, and the bosun’s pipe sounds out your orders. The second thing you’ll notice while getting used to the control scheme (more on that later) is how immersed you are in the game’s world. Luckily, the game has a thriving YouTube community if you want to see for yourself. Static screenshots don’t fully do it justice-you have to see the ships in motion to appreciate them. Even on low graphics settings it looks nice, thanks to solid art direction, but on maximum settings it is jaw-droppingly pretty. The first thing you’ll notice upon joining a game is how lovely it is to watch. If the Open World is anywhere near as good as the fighting we have right now, this game will be brilliant. In its current form, it’s just a multiplayer team death match, though developer Game Labs is hard at work at an Open World mode that will allow players to sail the open sea to explore, trade, or fight as they please. Naval Action is a beautiful multiplayer game that puts you at the wheel of a man-of-war from the Age of Sail, from a tiny Lynx or cutter to the colossal Santisima Trinidad. I crack a predatory grin as I bring the ship back around to starboard, preparing to give him another raking. A single gun booms as I check the range, then I unleash a smashing broadside, sending up a fountain of wood chips and debris from the enemy ship. The ship’s timbers groan as I bring her hard to port, sliding in onto the stern of an enemy frigate. The bosun’s whistle pipes as I order Battle Sails. Unlocking higher end ships requires a long grind. Worrying: Steep learning curve with no tutorial or manual (yet). Open World (in development) sounds like fun. Intuitive controls, but deep and challenging gameplay. $30, but preorders are temporarily suspended at the time of this writing see note at end of preview. (A limited run of this disc also includes a bonus EP, with four more songs from the 1965 solo recordings and two live cuts from 1970.) While nearly all of this material has been available before, The Early Years, Vols. And the album closes with a few tunes Parsons recorded with actor turned singer Brandon de Wilde, and while Parsons was a far better singer than de Wilde, their recordings of "Do Right Woman" and "Together Again" are the first glimpses of the style that would become Gram's hallmark. The set also includes a pair of tunes Parsons cut with the Like, his short-lived rock band, and they're smart, tuneful folk-rock, with "November Night" suggesting Parsons' country influences and Dylan infatuation were beginning to make themselves known. Once again, the fidelity is imperfect, but the performances are thoughtful and full of soul, and the songs, especially "Race with the Wind," "That Kind of Livin'," and "A River Is Made Out of Raindrops" show he was growing by leaps and bounds as a tunesmith. Next are eight living-room recordings from late 1965 of Parsons performing solo with his guitar in a friend's apartment in New York City. While the audio is less than ideal, the demo makes it clear the Shilos were one of the more accomplished groups following this path, with crisp instrumental work, excellent harmonies, and strong, subtly impassioned lead vocals from Parsons, and his originals "Big Country" and "Zah's Blues" show he was already making his mark as a songwriter. The first ten songs were taken from a demo Parsons recorded in 1965 at a radio station with the Shilos, a Kingston Trio-type folk group he sang with for a few years. 1-2, an augmented reissue of two out of print LPs from the archivists as Sierra Records, would be useful if only for preserving some of Parsons' first musical endeavors, but it also offers an entertaining snapshot of Gram's fledgling years as a folkie. (bio by: Iola) Family links: Parents: Frederic A.Most fans are presumably aware that Gram Parsons must have been doing something before he formed the International Submarine Band in 1966 and began drawing the blueprints of country-rock, but not many of them have actually heard the recorded evidence that's surfaced from Parsons' earliest recordings.
